CHAPTER 17

The talk with Kastro had lit a fire under Animal’s ass. He immediately went upstairs to call Noki. He was as nervous as a virgin girl on a prison cell block. Animal was still quite the novice with women and wasn’t sure how to go about asking her out on a date, so he just suggested that they go catch a movie. To his surprise, Noki accepted.

They had to be very cloak and dagger about it. Noki’s parents didn’t allow her to date, and they would’ve especially gone through the roof to find out she was with a black guy. With the rash of shootings in their hood, sneaking out after dark was not an option. Noki’s brothers had her on lockdown, and the only time she was permitted to leave the house was to go to school, and even then, one of her brothers always escorted her. Animal and Noki bided their time and plotted until they came up with the perfect plan. When her bother dropped her off at school, she would sneak out the side door and rendezvous with Animal.

Their first date was on a Friday. It had been raining off and on for two days. Animal had suggested that they reschedule, but Noki wouldn’t hear of it. She had put too much into her escape plan not to execute it. The meeting spot was a bodega two blocks away from Noki’s building. It wasn’t far from where Animal had once hustled with Brimstone. It was risky meeting in their neighborhood, where someone who knew Noki’s family could spot them, but it was the only mutual place that they both knew how to get to. Neither one of them had much experience traveling outside the neighborhood. Animal even had to search the internet for directions to the movie theater where they were going. They reasoned that they wouldn’t be there long enough to be spotted, so it was safe.

Animal had to pass K-Dawg’s block to get to the meeting spot with Noki. K-Dawg lived on a strip of brownstones that were in varying stages of dilapidation. Some were even abandoned. The residents who cared, did what they could to keep their properties up, but it was a losing battle. With the skyrocketing cost of living in New York City, and the crack heads that were squatting in the abandoned properties on the block, it almost didn’t seem worth it. It seemed like every time you turned around, families who had lived on the block for years were moving away.

Near the end of the block, Animal spotted several police cars and an ambulance. A few people from the neighborhood stood around, gossiping and on-looking. With his curiosity getting the best of him, Animal went over to see what had happened. As he neared the crowd, he realized that they were gathered in front of the building that K-Dawg lived in. Animal rushed over, bumping through the crowd, hoping that nothing bad had happened to K-Dawg or his family.
